Bring Back Tar and Feathers!

Back in the early days of our country elections were rough. Candidates would hold large drunken parties and use the power of drink to persuade the voters.  Voting was held at county courthouses so candidates had easy access to the voters.  James Madison saw the potential problem with this and refused to get involved in that type of campaigning.  He felt that the elected official would then be tempted to side with legislation that helped his friends rather than all of his constituents.  James Madison, the fourth president and "Father" of our constitution, lost that election.  But clearly he had great foresight into the problems of elections and politicians in general.  What Madison and other founders greatly worried over was money.  They felt that taxing the population would bring large amounts of money under the control of the Federal government and this would lead to corrupt government.  A general tarrif was favored instead. Wouldn't a national sales tax on all goods be more efficient and less prone to excess and cheating than our present system? Wouldn't a tax board comprised of middle class citizens be more efficient and less prone to excess and cheating than the billionaires who currently are in charge?

Why is Hank Paulson telling the Fed and the American people that banks need more money, that Goldman Sachs needs more money? OUR MONEY!  The man was given $700 million upon his departure from Goldman Sachs and now he wants the Fed to bail out that same company?  Hey Hank, how about giving them back that $700 million?

We spend obscene amounts of money in Iraq and Afghanistan. Money we can no longer afford. We need to put that money to good use right here at home where Americans can no longer afford their own homes. What is wrong with this picture.  

In the Revolutionary War era tax collectors and cheaters were tarred and feathered.

Republic or Democracy?

The Bush Administration has consistently declared that democracy is the best way to prevent and eliminate "ideologies of hatred."

This is a basic misunderstanding of the difference between a democracy and a republic. A democracy, in simple terms, is rule by the majority. In an ideal democracy the majority sacrifices some of its rule to the rights of the minority. But, what happens when extremists are the majority, as in the case of Hamas? Democracy and intolerance exist in tandem. Thus democracy in this case did not overcome the ideology of hatred.

In a republic, a large population, spread over a large territory, elects representatives. Ideally, this representative, owing little or nothing to any one faction, is better able to judge what is best for all of the people. This is my basic understanding of James Madison's The Federalist #10.

Alexander Hamilton and James Madison wrote extensively in the Federalist Papers that there are evils inherent in any form of representative government. As Madison stated they, "...may forget their obligation to their constituents, and prove unfaithful to their important trust."

In our republic, the rights of the minority are protected in many ways, not the least of which is the Bill of Rights. However, as Alexander Hamilton stated, even freedom loving people such as Americans may at times be willing to sacrifice their liberties as a response to "the continual effort and alarm attendant on a state of continual danger." Furthermore the people may, "...have a tendency to destroy their civil and political rights. To be more safe they at length become willing to run the risk of being less free."

No Amendment has been under more attack since 9/11/2001 than Article IV:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

So the next time you are searched at an airport think about Madison and Hamilton and realize that when we surrender our rights the "terrorists" have won.

Thus, Madison and Hamilton foresaw America circa 2008.

Obama? McCain? How about Madison!

We haven't heard much from Sarah Palin since the RNC ended. I have a feeling she is getting a crash course on politics. Compare that to Joe Biden, who might just be the one giving her the lessons!

My problem is, as I think it is with many Americans, who do I vote for in this election?

There are so many rumors about Palin that I've come to discount all of them.

There are so many rumors about Obama that I've come to discount all of them.

Same for McCain, mostly.

What I do know is that, whoever wins, it will just be more of the same Washington politics running this country.

Only one candidate spoke for real change...Ron Paul. And we know where that got him.
